Group repository tabs
Rename a tab, assign coloured groups, and collapse groups you are not in — names stay on this machine.
If you keep several checkouts that all live in a folder called frontend, the tab strip used to show the same label three times. You can now give each repository its own name, put related ones in a coloured group, and fold a group you’re not in down to a pill.
All of this lives in the title-bar tab strip (and the matching Recent repositories list on the start screen).
Give a repository a name
- Right-click the repository’s tab.
- Choose Rename… and type something you will recognise —
Acme · frontendis the usual pattern. - The tab and the Recent repositories row both update straight away. Hover still shows the full path.
A linked worktree of that repository uses the same name, with its branch after it. To go back to the folder name, right-click the tab and choose Use folder name.
Put related repositories in a group
- Right-click a tab and open Assign to group.
- Pick an existing group, or New group… to create one (name plus colour) with this repository as the first member.
- That group’s tabs sit together in a tray behind the group name. Recent repositories gets a heading per group; ungrouped repos sit last.
To move a repository, assign it to another group from the same menu. Remove from group takes it out without touching its custom name.
Dragging a tab only reorders it inside its group. Dragging the group’s tray moves the whole group. Membership always changes from the menu, not from a drop.
Collapse a group you’re not working in
Double-click the group name to fold it to a pill (chevron, name, tab count). Double-click the pill to expand it again. Or right-click the group — the name, or the pill — and choose Collapse group / Expand group.
If the repository you have open is in a collapsed group, that one tab stays visible beside the pill so you can still see where you are. Keyboard tab shortcuts (⌘1…9 and neighbours) follow the tabs you can see, and skip the folded ones.
That same group menu is also where you Rename group… or Delete group. Deleting a group only removes the grouping; repositories, names, and open tabs stay put.

Good to know
Names, groups, and collapsed state live on this machine, in GitLane. Nothing is written into the repository or its git config, so teammates don’t inherit your labels.
Clearing Recent repositories (or closing a tab) doesn’t lose them either — reopen the repo and the name and group are still there.
